Adoptions

In 2022 the rescue/shelter world was hit incredibly hard by inflation and people returning back to work after the pandemic. We rely on transport to be able to assist more dogs that we could adopt out locally. With shelters full across the nation, the transport opportunities came to a dead stop. Up until May of 2022 we transported 34 dogs to our partners before they were overwhelmed with local dogs. We did adopt 25 dogs locally for the year.

With the pandemic changing everything, even fosters were few and far between. But we were able to intake 64 new dogs thanks to our dedicated foster homes. We then realized we needed to focus back in on the issue at hand. Spay and Neuter!

We relaunched our voucher program and kicked off “The Fix” clinics helping residents gain access to affordable spay and neuter for their dogs and cats. The October clinic snipped 87 pets.

In 2021, 133 dogs were welcomed into DpoL. 25 adopted locally and 133 transported to our rescue partners for adoption.

In 2020, 141 new dogs joined our pack. 20 were adopted locally and 113 were adopted out by our rescue partners in the northeast states.

In 2019 we took in 96 new dogs, adopted 20 locally and transported 79 to partnering rescues.

In 2018 DPoL adopted out 31 dogs to homes putting our save rate at 99% again for the year! Though our adoption numbers may seem low compared to other years, we managed to transport 194 dogs to our partnering rescues all over the nation giving them better opportunities to be adopted in areas of the country not facing overpopulation issues like we have locally. This year we also acquired a spay and neuter grant which helped us give free services to 53 dogs and cats from in-need families in Livingston Parish. We didn’t stop there and continued to provided this service thanks to a generous donation from Dr. Allen.

In 2017 DPoL adopted out 54 dogs putting our save rate at 99%. Our adoption rate fell considerably this year as our region is still recovering from the Flood of 2016. We did however transfer 180 additional dogs to our partnering rescues this year, and facilitated the saves of even more homeless animals by providing transport services to other rescue organizations.

Our volunteers also shuttled hundreds of dogs, cats and even ferrets and bunnies to safety during hurricanes Harvey and Maria.

Also in 2017 we helped 661 dogs and cats get free or low cost spay and neuter services, thanks to our partnership with several clinics across the region and a grant from the American Humane Association.

DPoL adopted 103 dogs and 1 cat in 2016. With a save rate of 99%. Our adoption rate is climbing each year in our 3 years since inception.

DPoL’s dogs remain available for adoption for as long as it takes the perfect family to be found. Some dogs were adopted as long as 2 years after entering the foster program.

This save rate is calculated according to the Live Release Rate formula and does include dogs that were returned to owners and the over 100 dogs that were taken in by DPoL and transferred to our partnering rescues in the northeast. We are extremely proud to work with other organizations to be able to literally double the number of dogs and people we can help. These important friendships were life saving during the Great Flood of 2016. 500+ dogs and cats were saved from the flood waters due to the tireless efforts from countless organizations that came to our aid. We are forever grateful.

In 2015 DPoL adopted out 94 dogs with a save rate of 100%. 87 dogs were transferred to our partnering rescues and 250+ pets were spayed and neutered at our low cost and free clinics.

In 2013 and 2014 DPoL adopted out 155 dogs combined with a save rate of 100%. 121 dogs were transported to partnering rescues and over 200 animals were spayed and neutered in our community low cost and free clinics.
